Stunning

5 april 2009

Kenya is the country of the most beautiful smiles. In Nairobi people even say that the Masaai are the most beautiful men, but the way they look is nothing compared to their smiles. And it's not just the kids, everyone has a beautiful smile, and readily uses it. But then, having a smile as the only form of communication helps as well.

An example is Ngolai, who has one of the most beautiful smiles, even around here. It's incredible! I can sit around all day just watching him. Julia and I have spent many an evening going back and forth between 'I love it here!' and 'I love Ngolai'.

And then there is this boy in class 7 who has a stunning smile as well. He's not the brightest student (though it's mostly his english that gives problems), and he's not at all eager to learn. He will just sit in his bench teh entire lesson looking at you. Smiling. I look up to the class and meet his smile, wherever I look. Terribly distracting.

And then there was this man in shuka's (traditional clothing) we met walking to town. Once again Julia and I could not help but discuss for the next fifteen minutes how gorgeous he was. Unfortunately he was married. Which is the thing, everyone who is about our age is married here, probably even has 4 kids.

And then there's a woman livingright behind camp who is absolutely gorgeous. She stops by camp often because she is good friends with Ngolai and Richard (probably related. everyone is related here. and richard knows everyone...). So anyway, the first time Julia and I saw her, she left and we turned to each other to say: 'that woman is so beautiful!'. We didn't know her name, so we took to calling her the beautiful mama, and now a lot of people do so.

If everything goes well, I will have some pictures taken at school online today. You can check for yourself what you think.

The sun is shining these days, so there are more smiling people here as well :p I've been sitting on terraces and balconies a lot to enjoy the sun! Of course, we don't get as much sun as you do, but now you even tell us we don't get as many smiling faces... what do we have left here?
I miss you a lot! But at least, now that you're not here, I'm diligently studying my Portuguese :p
Lots of love and kisses! Nita
